Paul’s Schwinn Sidewinder Motorized Bike (Mountain Bike)

While I was thinking that this motorized bike kit install would be a piece of cake, it did turn out problematic in more than a couple of areas…

Paul was a really good sport though. And is sending great reports about his motorized bike in the last few days, though I need to get with him just to check out things on the bike. In the end though, this is one of the best looking bikes I have built to date…

  • Sidewinder 5 Sidewinder 5 The candidate
  • Sidewinder 6 Sidewinder 6 More of the candidate...note the upswing in the lower tube...this will quickly become a problem.
  • Sidewinder 3 Sidewinder 3 The kit...a 66/80 cc 2 smoker!
  • Sidewinder 4 Sidewinder 4
  • Sidewinder 1 Sidewinder 1 My new logo stickers...looks cool, huh?
  • Sidewinder 2 Sidewinder 2 More of the shameless plugs...
  • Sidewinder 7 Sidewinder 7 Our first issue to encounter...the upswing in the lower tube crowds the engine so the intake and carb won't fit into the frame.
  • Sidewinder 9 Sidewinder 9 At least Paul hhad a good sense of humor about this motorized bike build.
  • Sidewinder 8 Sidewinder 8 No matter what I did it just wouldn't fit...so we ordered an offset intake tube to resolve this issue.
  • sidewinder 27 sidewinder 27 The offset intake in action...moved the carb to the left at least 1.5 inches.
  • sidewinder 23 sidewinder 23 And now, on to the next issue...the chain!
  • sidewinder 20 sidewinder 20 While it was one of the tightest chain installs I have done to date, there were issues.
  • sidewinder 18 sidewinder 18 Under the clutch plate, the chain was binding against the cover...never seen this before...but easily adjusted...
  • sidewinder 17 sidewinder 17 Would have used a grinder, but the grinder bench hasn't been set up yet.
  • sidwinder 14 sidwinder 14 Used a file to take off just enough for the chain to ride without any binding or rubbung
  • sidewinder 15 sidewinder 15
  • sidewinder 11 sidewinder 11 Probably could have made this bike run without the idler pulley...but why take chances on a pissed customer that can't keep the chain on.
  • Sidewinder 10 Sidewinder 10
  • sidewinder 30 sidewinder 30 The finished product after the very first run...
  • sidewinder 24 sidewinder 24 Took a lot of adjustment on the carb, but it ran pretty well after a few minutes of tuning and love.
  • sidewinder 29 sidewinder 29 Both brake handles on one side...my solution to a double pull single lever brake handle.
  • sidewinder 28 sidewinder 28 Changed the rear derailer shifter to the clutch side...it makes the readout upside down, but it still operates perfectly.
  • sidewinder 25 sidewinder 25 One final shameless plug...
  • sidewinder 31 sidewinder 31 One happy camper. I also have videos of him riding home on it I plan to post in the near future.
